Demon's Crossings: Chapter 1
The Beginning of the Adventure
Walking down the shadow covered street I lower the shotgun from my shoulder, cock it, and turn the corner. Standing in the shadowy light I watch them milling around, observed their attitudes, the way they walk, talk, and act. I watch them like this for a few minutes and then step forward into the light.
“Welcome Raina. I see you have made it,” the first guy said, noticing me approach. He was tall, with dark hair and green eyes that showed his suspicion. He had a single scar under his left eye, and wore black, fingerless gloves that went to the middle of his arm.
“Why did you call me here?” I questioningly ask, raising my shotgun threateningly.
“Hear us through first, chick,” the second boy said pushing down the barrel of my gun. He’s shorter than I am with lighter hair and soft hazel eyes that show his fear. He couldn’t be older than 13 or 14 years old and showed years of pain in his step.
“I don’t even know your names… why should I trust either of you?” I hiss at him, internally laughing when he recoils.
“Leave him be Raina… I’m Skyler, and he’s Kai. We’re brothers… and we need your help.” Skyler whisper walking forward to stand before me.
“Where did you get my name?” I ask standing my ground.
dar
“I got it. That’s all that matters. And now will you help us?” He asks, his green eyes hard and cold.
“Let me think, me help you, two guys I don’t know anything about. Two guys I don’t even know, who still manage to get their hands on my name, and my number.” I stated sarcastically, lifting my shotgun back to my shoulder, “Why should I waste the bullets?”
“Please Raina… you may not know us yet and if we had a safe place to talk I would explain everything” Skyler whispers reaching out and catching my arm as I turn away.
“Come on Skyler… let’s take her back to the loft with us. You can talk there,” Kai said turning and disappearing into the solid wall behind him.
“Kai we’ll have to go the long way this time… I’m pretty sure she can’t go with us like that,” Skyler said, shifting uncomfortably on his feet.
“Why not? You said this girl was good,” Kai said from somewhere in the wall.
“She’s good Kia, but not that good,” Skyler said walking forward to drag him out of the wall by his shirt.
“What are you?” I hiss, raising my shotgun, and backing away.
“You don’t need to be afraid of us.” Skyler whispers, appearing behind me. Wrapping his arms around me, I could only watch silently, a scream caught somewhere in my throat as the world went black.
When I wake up the room is dark. I can see everything around me in little bits and pieces. I can even partially hear Kia and Skyler fighting in the other room.
“You shouldn’t have done that Sky!” Kai shouts.
“I did it so she didn’t shoot us!” Skyler counters, “Just wait until she wakes up!”
Rising from the cot I was left on, I walk into the other room. Sitting on a desk just inside the room, I watched them glare at each other. I listen to them argue for another few minutes then decide I would let my presence be known.
“Hello boys, you sound like my brothers” I laugh light-heartedly from where I'm perched.
Spinning around both boys spread sets of huge wings, obviously startled. Kai disappears into nowhere instantly and before I can blink Skyler is standing behind me, picking me up, as Kai jumps up out of the floor and tries to attack me. Setting me down Skyler pulls me behind him and raises his fists.
“Stop!” I shout dodging around Skyler, “Don’t fight each other over me!”
“Stay out of this Raina…” Skyler growls from behind me, placing his hand on my shoulder.
“I’m out of here before you two start kissing” Kai hisses flying up through the ceiling.
Turning I looked Skyler in the eyes, pleading with him for answers. Stepping forward he takes my hand and leads me back into the room where the cot was. Sitting down on a staircase half covered in shadow, he watches me, as if he's collecting his thoughts. It cast deep shadows across his face, made him look tired and yet so beautiful in the limited light.
“Do you care to explain things now?” I ask standing there in front of him.
“I have been watching you lately… I first saw you hunting in the woods, took one watch at how you could shoot and how you hunted, and knew you’d be able to help us,” he says looking at me.
“There’s more to it than that” I whisper walking over to him and letting my fingers run down his cheek.
“Kai and I are… demons” he whispers pausing before saying ‘demons’, “We’re running from this group of activists that want all the genetic experiments killed from the lab where we were created. They think all the experiments are violent and unpredictable, but we’re not.”
Pausing I look him in the eyes. I can tell there is more he isn’t telling me. “And…?”
“And nothing.” He replies looking up at me and pulling my hand off of his cheek. Standing he looks me in the eyes. “So will you help us?”
“What do I get in return?” I ask turning around to walk back into the shadows.
“A place to stay, some friends, the knowledge that you’ve saved two lives…” Skyler offers, rising to lean against the stairs, “And for now the first one can apply. It’s getting late… you’re welcome to the cot or where ever you’re comfortable. We can finish this tomorrow.”
Turning he seems to walk straight into the wall and disappear. Sitting down on the stairs I pull a blanket around my shoulders and nod off to sleep. It wasn’t every day I was dragged into some new suicide mission.
